Education for
Sustainable Development

What is Education for Sustainable Development?

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) equips students with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes they need to build a sustainable future. It encourages learners to think critically and act responsibly by addressing pressing global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and inequality. Through ESD, children explore real-world issues in ways that are engaging and age-appropriate. They learn to appreciate the interconnectedness of people and the planet, develop problem-solving and decision-making skills, and take ownership of creating positive change. At its core, ESD fosters a sense of responsibility for the environment and society while empowering students to lead sustainable lives. It integrates principles of respect, care, and stewardship into every aspect of learning, helping children grow into compassionate and informed global citizens. By embedding sustainability into education, we prepare our students not just for academic success but for meaningful contributions to a better world.

About the ESD Program

At Lamai International School (LIS), we are proud to integrate an Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) programme into our curriculum. ESD inspires positive changes in knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes, empowering students to make informed decisions and take responsible action toward a more sustainable, equitable, and healthy world. Our ESD programme is guided by the United Nations Agenda 2030 and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a strong emphasis on Socio-Emotional Learning. Through this approach, students develop the understanding and competencies needed to address real-world sustainability challenges while growing into compassionate and responsible global citizens. At LIS, we view learning as a holistic process that extends beyond academic achievement. We encourage our students to learn with their minds, hearts, and hands—to think critically, act thoughtfully, and connect meaningfully with others and their environment. Together with parents and the wider community, we aim to nurture a generation that is kind, empathetic, and committed to creating a better world.

Integrating sustainability across the curriculum

ESD incorporates sustainability into all subjects, such as exploring ecosystems in science, building sustainble cities in Art or discussing global inequalities in Humanities. By making sustainability a natural part of everyday learning, students develop a deeper understanding of its relevance to different areas of life.

Fostering Practical,
Hands-on Learning

Students engage in real-world projects that encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and action. Activities like planting school gardens, or conducting energy audits empower students to see the impact of their efforts and connect classroom learning to community initiatives.

Promoting Global Citizenship and Personal Responsibility

ESD helps students develop empathy, collaboration skills, and a sense of accountability for their actions. By teaching them to value diversity, equity, and environmental stewardship, schools prepare students to become thoughtful, active participants in creating a more sustainable world.
